Reading
Reading is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role in the cognitive and emotional development of young people. Reading improves vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. It helps young people understand complex concepts and develop their ability to analyse and summarise information.
Regular reading is linked to better performance in school. It enhances concentration, memory, and discipline, which are essential for academic success. Books transport readers to different worlds, sparking imagination and creativity. This can inspire young people to think outside the box and develop innovative ideas. Reading about diverse characters and situations helps young people develop empathy and understanding. It allows them to see the world from different perspectives and build emotional resilience.
If you are a parent, aim to talk about the books your children are reading. Ask questions about the story, characters, and their thoughts. This enhances comprehension and critical thinking.
Our Reading Passports are a fantastic tool to guide young readers through a diverse range of books. The books suggested on the reading passports are carefully selected to offer variety, helping students explore different genres, cultures and themes.
The books are separated into a different passport for KS3 and KS4. There is also a Read to Succeed Passport for our students with lower reading ages, offering a chance to engage with books that are a suitable challenge for their reading level.
Working towards completing these passports will also help students complete a pledge in school.
We hope that this is a good starting point for students wanting to get back to reading regularly.
